How a Commission Actually Works: From a Single Block to Your Home
Most furniture is bought. A commission is made. Between the moment you say "we have been thinking about a stone dining table" and the morning it is set down in your home, a great deal happens that you never see. This is what those weeks actually look like, stage by stage, with the honest parts left in.
It begins with a conversation, not a catalogue
Every commission starts the same way: you tell us what you are imagining. Some clients arrive with an architect's drawing. Most arrive with a photograph, a rough sketch, or just a sentence. All three are enough. There is no minimum level of preparedness for a first consultation, and no obligation attached to it.
This is also where our Visualizer earns its place. Upload a photo of your room, describe the piece, and see it standing in your own space before a single decision is made. It is not a render of the final piece — natural stone will always have its own ideas — but it answers the question that matters first: does this belong here?
Design: the decisions that shape everything
Once the idea is settled, we work through the decisions that turn it into a buildable drawing. Dimensions, always checked against how you will actually live with the piece. The stone itself — a choice we never rush, because each material behaves differently. Indian Statuario brings luminous drama; Bhainslana Black brings depth and calm; Udaipur Green brings movement. And the finish, which changes more than most people expect: we wrote a separate guide on honed versus polished for exactly this stage.
One decision most buyers never think about is veining orientation — which way the stone's natural lines will run across the finished piece. It costs nothing to decide deliberately and it is the difference between a piece that looks composed and one that looks cut at random.
The quote: one number, honestly built
A commission is quoted as a whole: the block, the carving, the finishing, delivery and installation. The price moves with three things — the stone you chose, the size of the block it demands, and the complexity of the carving. You also receive a firm timeline with the quote, and we keep to it.
Choosing the block
This is the stage we refuse to hurry. A piece carved from a single block is only ever as good as the block, so we select it with you — its soundness, its colour, and where its veins will fall on the finished form. Because everything we make is monolithic, there are no joints to hide behind: the block you approve is the piece you receive.
The build: eight to eighteen weeks, and why
The carving is the longest and most patient stage — typically 8 to 18 weeks depending on the stone, the size and the finish. Stone does not forgive. It is cut slowly, shaped in passes, and hand-finished by craftsmen who have done this their whole working lives. A rushed cut cannot be undone, so nothing is rushed.
You are not left wondering during those weeks. We send updates from the workshop at each stage, and you will see your block become a form long before it arrives.
Delivery: the part people underestimate
Stone is heavy, and we treat that seriously rather than poetically. A finished piece travels crated and protected, and installation is white-glove: our team places it exactly where it belongs. If you live above the ground floor, tell us early — stairwells, lifts and floor loading are all solvable, but they are solved in planning, not on delivery day.
The honest part
The finished piece will not exactly match any photograph, including ours. Natural stone varies from block to block — that is not a defect but the entire point of choosing it over an engineered material. What you receive is the block you approved, carved to the drawing you signed off, with veining no other piece in the world will repeat. Commissioning is a small act of trust in that process, and every stage above exists to make the trust easy.
