The Story

Aakash means sky — the oldest of the five elements, the one a room secretly aspires to. We hammered this canopy in Moradabad, the brass and copper city in Uttar Pradesh whose workshops have lit the durbars of north India for three centuries. The strokes of the maker's hammer are left visible across the sheet, close and even, the way a calligrapher leaves the press of the nib in the line. Twelve bulbs are recessed into the inner bowl so the light bounces upward off the metal and out across the ceiling. Hung high in a double-height room, it changes the light in the way a sky changes the light — by being above everything else.
