ANGAN — CUT 02

Pink Sandstone Three-Arch Mandir

A larger architectural mandir in pink Indian sandstone from Bansi Paharpur, with three carved arches across the front and a stepped platform. The stone holds the warm coral of Rajasthani forts. Built for a dedicated room — a house within the house, the courtyard the name carries.

The Story

Angan means courtyard — the open square at the centre of every traditional Indian house, where weddings happened and grandmothers sat through the afternoon. We carved this larger mandir from the pink sandstone of Bansi Paharpur, the same quarry that built the red walls of Fatehpur Sikri five hundred years ago. Three arches across the front, a stepped platform, the warm coral of a Rajasthani fort wall at sunset. It is sized for a room that has been given to it entirely. A house within the house — the courtyard returned to its centre, even when the centre is now an apartment on a sixteenth floor.
