The Story

Some sacred objects belong in corners — the angle of two walls is the oldest shelter the house knows, the place a child runs to when nothing else feels safe. We made this mandir in Saharanpur, the woodworking town in Uttar Pradesh whose carvers have furnished the homes of north India since the Mughal period. The teak is from Burma, oiled by hand to a low warm sheen. Set flush into the platform is a brass lotus, hammered into the grain so it sits as part of the wood. Sized small enough to disappear into the angle, and large enough to mean something to anyone who has lived in the house long enough to find it.
