JALAJ — CUT 01

Alabaster Lotus Basin

A lotus-form basin carved from honey-coloured alabaster, the petals opening outward from a hand-hollowed centre. The stone holds a slight translucence — held against morning light, the rim glows faintly amber. A water-born piece, named for what is born of water.

The Story

The lotus opens in dirty water and stays clean — the oldest metaphor the subcontinent has for what a household tries to be. We carved this basin from honey-coloured alabaster, quarried in the hills around Jaipur, and opened the petals outward from a hand-hollowed centre. The stone is just translucent enough that morning light passes through the rim and warms it amber from inside. Water settles into it and rests. To wash a face here is to repeat, very quietly, a gesture older than any of us — the day is taken in by the household, and the day is given back clean.
