KALASH — CUT 03

Hammered Copper Ceremonial Vessel

A small ceremonial vessel hammered from a single sheet of copper, the surface left dimpled by the maker's strokes and aged to a deep verdigris patina. The mouth is narrow, the body full — the classical kalash silhouette held in miniature. For a console, a shelf, a threshold offering.

The Story

Every Indian threshold once carried a small vessel — water at the door, marigolds for arrival, a coin for the daily blessing. We hammered this one from a single sheet of copper in Tambat Ali, the lane in Pune where copper has been worked for four hundred years and the sound of the hammer has not stopped. The surface is left dimpled by the maker's strokes and aged to a slow verdigris. The mouth is narrow, the body full — the classical kalash silhouette held in miniature. Set it on a console, a shelf, the corner of a sideboard. The threshold remembers what it is for.
