PARVAT — CUT 01

Black Galaxy Granite Bench

A solid block of black galaxy granite, quarried in Andhra Pradesh, where flecks of bronze mica scatter across the dark like a night sky. The seat surface is carved from the same mass as the legs — one stone, one cut. Heavy, low, meant to stay.

The Story

A bench is furniture for the household to gather — at the foot of a bed, across an entryway, along the verandah where shoes come off. We carved this one from a single block of black galaxy granite, quarried near Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, where the bronze mica scatters across the stone like the night sky over the Krishna river. Seat and legs are one continuous mass — what looks like assembly is actually subtraction, the negative space cut away from a single piece. Heavy on purpose. Low on purpose. The kind of object a house grows around rather than rearranges.
