The Story

Madhubani is the only painting tradition in India that belongs almost entirely to women — for nine hundred years the courtyards of Mithila in north Bihar have been the gallery, and the wall the canvas. Karpoori Devi paints in the bharni filling style, the line work drawn first in lampblack and the colour packed inside it afterward in natural pigment — turmeric, indigo, vermilion ground from rock. Fish for fertility. Peacocks for the rains. Figures for the stories every woman in the village knows. Hung indoors, the panel becomes what it has always been: a conversation between the maker and the surface, signed in the artist's own hand.
