TARANG — CUT 01

Mandala on Canvas

A circular mandala painted on stretched canvas in natural pigment — ochre, indigo, lampblack, terracotta. The pattern moves outward in concentric rings, each ring a slow wave from the centre. Named for the wave, tarang — what travels and stays.

The Story

The mandala is a map of the way attention moves — outward from a single point, ring by ring, until the eye has travelled the whole circumference and come back. Painted in our Jaipur studio in natural pigment ground from rock and earth — ochre, indigo, lampblack, terracotta — the pattern is drawn freehand, no compass, no grid. Each ring is a slow wave from the centre, the way the surface of a tank in a Rajasthani stepwell moves when one drop falls. Hung in a meditation room or above a low bed, it does what a mandala has always done in this part of the world: it gives the breath somewhere to rest.
