VITAN — CUT 01

Brass Mosaic Pendant

A pendant made of thirty-eight hand-cut panels in soft brass and aged gold, tessellated across a curved canopy. Each panel is set by hand, the seams aligned so the light reads as one warm field. Hangs over a dining table, low.

The Story

Vitan is the canopy — the cloth ceiling held up over the seated, the gesture by which a household says: this is shelter, eat. Every panel of this pendant was hand-cut and set by craftsmen in Moradabad, the brassworking city of Uttar Pradesh, where mosaic ceilings have been pieced together for the durbars of Awadh and Rajputana for three hundred years. The seams are aligned so the light reads as one warm field rather than thirty-eight small reflections. Hung low over a dining table, it does the thing the woven canopy did at a wedding: it draws the room inward, around the people sitting beneath it.
