Marichi — Indian Onyx

Marichi

The legend

Marichi — “a ray of light”.

Stone is the material we trust because light stops at it. Onyx is the exception: cut thin enough, it stops being a surface and becomes a filter — the vein turns into the light. Marichi is a column lantern that puts a sheet of Indian onyx in front of a lamp and lets the stone’s own geology do the work a shade usually does.

The onyx is intended to be wrapped in hand-blown glass, each panel carrying the slight waver of the maker’s breath. It is the only piece in the atelier you could not photograph honestly with the lights off.

Marichi is a new atelier concept, currently in development — we are pairing the right Indian onyx with the right glass workshop before we take a first commission. Register your interest and we will bring you in as the piece comes to life.

Cut the stone thin enough, and the vein becomes the light.
