Sthala

The legend

Sthala — “the ground”.

Sthala is a sculpted hourglass stool in Indian Statuario — a form found in temple courtyards and royal music rooms alike, where a seat had to be beautiful from every approach because it stood in the middle of everything.

Turned from one block, its waist is sized to be lifted with two hands and moved wherever the conversation goes.

Every Sthala is carved to order in our New Delhi atelier — the block chosen with you, the proportions tuned to your space, the surface finished by hand. Reference size: Ø 38 × 45 cm, in a honed finish.

Temple drummers sat on turned stone; the rhythm asked for steadiness.
